State of Mathematical Optimization 2024 Report Gurobi is pleased to share the State of Mathematical Optimization 2024 Report, which highlights how today’s operations researchers, data scientists, and many others are applying mathematical optimization to tackle complex challenges. Earlier this year, Gurobi surveyed 440 of its commercial users to understand how they are using mathematical optimization at work. This survey, the third in the series, aims to understand how workers and businesses engage with mathematical optimization to make better, data-driven decisions and achieve optimal outcomes. We hope this report serves as a useful guide for anyone looking to unlock new opportunities by applying mathematical optimization in their organization. Overview 2 | 2024 Report State of Mathematical Optimization Education Most respondents (82%) reported holding advanced degrees, with 46% holding a master’s degree and 36% holding a doctorate. More than half (57%) of all respondents studied Operations Research, followed by Data Science (34%), Mathematics (32%), and Engineering (31%). Experience Respondents included both experienced practitioners (41% reported having 7+ years of commercial optimization experience), and those who were relatively new to optimization (59% with less than six years of experience). Job Role Many (29%) respondents identified their workplace role as Operations Research, followed by Data Science (19%), Other (13%), Analytics (11%), and Engineering (11%). Industry The most prominent industries represented in the study include Consulting (13%), Transportation (10%), Power and Utilities (10%), and Supply Chain (8%). The industries using mathematical optimization continue to diversify compared to the 2021 and 2023 survey findings, indicating that this approach to problem solving may be proliferating across business sectors. Survey Profile In order to identify optimization trends in business settings, this report focuses on respondents who are current commercial Gurobi users and does not include those who identify as “academic” or “other” users.
