O envelhecimento é um processo natural
Ocorre a diminuição progressiva da reserva funcional dos indivíduos. 
Objetivo: avaliar funcionalidade e qualidade de vida do idoso.
 
Seu declínio funcional pode sugerir a presença de doenças ou alterações ainda não diagnosticadas.
