4 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns 2. Artigo Definido The Na Língua Portuguesa, temos quatro artigos definidos. The computer is black – O computador é preto. The computers are grey – Os computadores são pretos. The TV is big – A televisão é grande. The TVs are big – As televisões são grandes. No exemplo: The cell phone is white – O celular é branco – A palavra branco modifica o substantivo mochila (backpack). Tom wrote a book. The book is about art – Tom escreveu um livro. Usamos o artigo definido também para substantivos considerados únicos em sua espécie como a lua, o sol etc: the moon (a lua), the sun (o sol), the sky (o céu), the Earth (o planeta Terra), the universe (o universo): The sun is shining – O sol está brilhando. O mesmo vale para quando se fala de algo que remete a nomes geográficos de um rio, um mar, um oceano, canais, polos, desertos, golfos, veja: the Mississipi River, the Pacific ocean, the English Channel (O Canal da Mancha), the South Pole (o polo Sul), the Sahara desert, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, etc. Exemplo: The Pacific Ocean is very big. As exceções ficam por conta das seguintes ilhas: the Aleutians, the Hebrides, or the Canary Islands. The United States, The United Kingdom, The United Arab Emirates, The Dominican Republic, The Bahamas, The Philippines. He lives in the USA – Ele mora nos EUA. The Economist, The New York Times, The Beatles, The Washington Post, The Empire States, The Louvre, The Kremlin, The Taj Mahal, The Vatican etc. Então, ao dizer Susan is my friend – Susan é minha amiga, não podemos jamais escrever ou falar "The Susan is my friend" – nunca! Vejamos exemplos. Tennis is a great sport. O tênis é um ótimo esporte. Biology is an important science. A Biologia é uma ciência importante. Yellow is Paul's favorite color. Quando vamos construir frases no passado e futuro, usando last e next, não usamos o artigo the antes deles, pois são expressões temporais: I will travel next month. Eu vou viajar no próximo mês e não “in the next month”, ou em referência ao passado last month e nunca “in the last month”, isso não existe. 6 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns 3. Por exemplo, I can see a few traffic lights ahead (eu consigo ver alguns semáforos à frente). 7 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns Mas a e an são usados apenas com substantivos contáveis. Vamos ver exemplos. I bought some glasses (eu comprei alguns copos) – we did some shopping (nós fizemos algumas compras) – Did you buy any glasses? (você comprou copos?) – Did you buy any milk? (você comprou leite?) We watched many episodes (nós assistimos a muitos episódios) – I don’t have much work to do (eu não tenho muito trabalho a fazer) Agora, observe um esquema simples usando os artigos definidos e indefinidos de forma resumida para ajudar você a se lembrar das regras. Agora, vamos aos substantivos. Let’s go! Let’s do this! Exemplos: Patricia, Amazon River, Oxford University, Sunday, Saturday, January, February, American, British, Brazilian – Patrícia, Rio Amazonas, Universidade de Oxford, domingo, sábado, janeiro, fevereiro, americano, britânico, brasileiro. Veja: I have good news for you. (Eu tenho boas notícias para você), She needs some help (Ela precisa de ajuda). He loves listening to music (Ele ama ouvir música). I will give you some advice. Por exemplo: The news is fantastic. Veja: 15 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns Her hair is brown. When she finds a gray hair, she immediately pulls it out - Os cabelos dela são castanhos. Veja: 200,000 - two hundred thousand – Three pens (três canetas), three million dollars (três milhões de dólares), two billion (dois bilhões). Exemplos: Index = Indeces or indexes, Appendix = Appendices or Appendixes, Vortex = Vortices or Vortexes. Ex.: 1- No more than six persons can use the elevator at the same time. 2- We need a table for six people. Nesse caso, people é a única opção correta. O plural de people, no sentido de povo, tem acréscimo de -s: The South people enjoys barbecue. (O povo do Sul gosta de churrasco). Como a palavra people está no singular, o verbo to enjoy, correspondente no Present Simple, vai fazer a concordância, sendo acrescentado de -s para a terceira pessoa – o povo (ele) gosta. Agora, nessa frase: Some Indian peoples have different cultural habits – Alguns povos indianos têm costumes culturais estranhos, o verbo está fazendo a concordância com o plural peoples. – Where are my sunglasses? - E nunca: “Where is my sunglasses?”. Temos como outros exemplos, além de politics, acoustics (acústica), athletics (atletismo), electronics (eletrônica), genetics (genética), linguistics (linguística), mathematics (matemática), physics (física) e statistics (estatística): General Statistics can show you the real results of our project. 20 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns IRREGULAR PLURAL NOUNS LIST (LISTA DE SUBSTANTIVOS COM PLURAL IRREGULAR) life = lives (vidas) man = men (homens) oasis = oases (oásis) oats = oats (aveia) ox = oxen (bois) parenthesis = parentheses (parênteses) salmon = salmon (salmões) scales = scales (balanças) scarf = scarves (lenços, cachecóis) scissors = scissors (tesouras) series = séries (series de TV) sheep = sheep (ovelhas) synthesis = syntheses (sínteses) synopsis = synopses (sinopses) surroundings = surroundings (arredores) species = species (espécie) stairs = stairs (escadas) thanks = thanks (obrigado(a) thesis = theses (teses) tooth = teeth (dentes) trout = trout (trutas) woman = women (mulheres) alga = algae (algas marinhas) analysis = analyses (análises) appendix = appendices (indices) basis = bases (base) binoculars = binoculars (binóculos) bus = buses (ônibus) child = children (crianças) clothes = clothes (roupas) crisis = crises (crises) diagnosis = diagnoses (diagnósticos) dwarf = dwarves (anões) elk = elk (alces) fish = fish (peixes) foot = feet (pés) gentleman = gentleman (cavalheiros) glasses = glasses (óculos) half = halves (metades) hypothesis = hypotheses (hipóteses) jeans = jeans (calças jeans) knife = knives (facas) matrix = matrices/matrixes (matrizes) mouse = mice (ratos) 21 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns Nouns examples (Exemplos de substantivos) 22 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns 5.0 QUESTÕES DE PROVAS ANTERIORES 1. Why I stopped mispronouncing my Igbo name In Nigeria, the language spoken by one of the largest ethnic groups, the Igbo, is in danger of dying out – which is odd because the population is growing. In the past this didn’t worry Nkem Ifejika, who is himself Igbo but never learned the language. When he is in Nigeria, he says his parents are Igbo. He might throw in that he partly grew up in the United Kingdom. In Britain, He says he’s Nigerian, though he often adds explainers about having been educated at British schools and lived outside Nigeria since he was 12 years old. Nkem Ifejika can speak English, French among others. However, he can’t speak the language of his ancestors. Igbo is a tonal language, so the words with the wrong stresses and tones either change their meaning, or worse, become unintelligible. In Igboland, as it’s informally known, names have meaning and history. Nkemakonam means “may I not lack what is mine”, while Ifejika means “what I have is greater”. By mispronouncing his names, he was throwing away generation of history, and disregarding his parents’ careful choice. His indefatigable and proudly wife, who is also Igbo, helped him out when they met. Now he knows how to pronounce his name properly, with the correct tones and with pride. While cases of the virus have climbed across Europe, Spain has led the pack in recent days. More than 78,000 cases have been detected in the past two weeks, pushing the 14-day infection rate to 166 per 100,000, compared with 67 in France and 22 in the UK. The steady rise has raised the spectre of fresh lockdowns in the coming weeks, particularly in Madrid where unions have warned that the primary care system is “on the edge of collapse”, due to a lack of staff and testing resources. “If things continue as they are going, we’ll probably have to return to some sort of confinement, at least partially,” José Felix Hoyo Jiménez of the Spanish non-profit Médicos del Mundo told the broadcaster TeleMadrid on Monday. While the recent rise had been steady, it was likely to be less pronounced than what the country experienced in March and April, he added. A further 53 people were rescued by French authorities after getting into difficulties before reaching British waters. Some 145 people had crossed the Channel in 18 small boats on Tuesday. 31 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns Rough seas brought on by Storm Francis made crossings impossible at the end of August, but conditions have improved in the first two days of September. Speaking in the Commons during Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Johnson said:"I have a great deal of sympathy with those who are desperate as to put their children in dinghies or in children's paddling pools and try to cross the channel. "But I have to say what they're doing is falling prey to criminal gangs and they are breaking the law." He added: "It also undermines the legitimate claims of others who seek asylum in this country”. "We will address the rigidities in our laws that make this country, I'm afraid, a target and a magnet for those who would exploit vulnerable people in this way." More than 1,468 migrants made the crossing by small boat in August despite a vow from Home Secretary Priti Patel to make the dangerous route "unviable". The Home Office does not provide information on how many children are making the crossing on small boats. Home Office minister Chris Philp told the Commons on Wednesday the government was attempting to return 1,000 people who had arrived in the UK, having "previously claimed asylum in European countries, and under the regulations legally should be returned there". Instead, for the first time in the 31 years he and his wife, Sue, have owned Pekadill’s, a sandwich shop in Whitehall, Mich., he has no new waitresses or counter help to train. At the neat white clapboard restaurant two blocks from White Lake, business is down about 20 percent. If the situation doesn’t improve, Dillivan worries he may be forced to abandon year- round operations and put Pekadill’s into hibernation this winter. Sales have fallen because the town’s biggest employer, Howmet Aerospace, recently laid off nearly one-quarter of its 2,800 employees. Howmet’s commercial aerospace business is a casualty of the coronavirus pandemic that has grounded thousands of airplanes and cast into doubt air carriers’ hopes of quickly resuming normal operations. Even as the White House celebrates tentative signs of a labor market rebound, the ripples from Howmet’s decision show that the pandemic’s imprint upon the U.S. economy is hardening into a 36 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns scar. What began in China five months ago as a distant threat to U.S. factories’ supply chains has evolved into a mammoth shortfall in consumer and business spending that could hobble the economy for years. “We’re just down the street from two of the biggest plants. Their business has been what keeps this place going on a year-round basis,” Dillivan said. “We’ve already felt an impact. The days of bringing in lunch have really come to a stop. Corporate catering has all but dried up.” Some Virginia businesses are reopening, but economic fears loom The plight of this cozy sandwich shop suggests that the economy’s recovery from the fastest, deepest recession in U.S. history is likely to be a long, grinding affair. Unemployment in Muskegon County is a staggering 29 percent — and the statewide figure for Michigan is only slightly better at a depression-caliber 22.7 percent. As states gradually reopen for business, many economists expect a swift but only partial healing that will leave millions of Americans jobless. More than $6.5 trillion in household wealth vanished during the first three months of this year as the pandemic tightened its hold on the global economy, the Federal Reserve said this week. That’s roughly equivalent to the economies of the United Kingdom and France combined. “This is the biggest economic shock in the U.S. andin the world, really, in living memory,” Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell said Wednesday. “We went from the lowest level of unemployment in 50 years to the highest level in close to 90 years, and we did it in two months.” Almost 90 percent of the 20 million workers who lost their jobs in April said they had been laid off temporarily and expected to return to their jobs, a possible sign the economy might quickly return to normal. When employers unexpectedly reported adding 2.5 million jobs in May, President Trump touted the labor market rebound as the start of a “rocket ship” recovery. In recent public appearances, the president has proclaimed a “transition to greatness” that will soon produce “spectacular” results. Yet economists are far less sanguine. Roughly 9 million workers who believe they have been laid off temporarily will end up losing their jobs permanently, according to Oxford Economics. After a quick initial bounce this year, the economy “will go largely sideways” until a coronavirus vaccine is developed, according to economist Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics. Without an additional $1 trillion in federal rescue efforts, the economy later this year will relapse into a double-dip recession, he added. But being a measured realist might be even better for your mental health, researchers say. Life coaches and motivational speakers often treat positive thinking as the key to happiness. Self-help books tend to promote a similar message, with Norman Vincent Peale’s bestseller The Power of Positive Thinking claiming: When you expect the best, you release a magnetic force in your mind which by a law of attraction tends to bring the best to you. The idea is not merely that optimistic thinking dispels present gloom, but that it also launches a self-fulfilling prophecy whereby simply believing in success delivers it. In happiness terms, optimistic thinking seems to be a win-win strategy. Perhaps this is why unrealistic optimism – the tendency to overestimate the likelihood that good things will happen and underestimate the likelihood that bad things will happen – is one of the most pervasive human traits. Studies consistently show that a large majority of the population (about 80% according to most estimates) display an overly optimistic outlook. But pessimism does 39 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns have its advocates. Despite the fact that expecting the worst can be extremely psychological painful, pessimists are, by their nature, fairly immune to disappointment. As the English writer Thomas Hardy noted: Pessimism is, in brief, playing the sure game. You cannot lose at it; you may gain. It is the only view of life in which you can never be disappointed. Having reckoned what to do in the worst possible circumstances, when better arise, as they may, life becomes child’s play. This view receives implicit support from Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman and his late colleague, Amos Tversky. According to their concept of loss aversion, we feel twice as much pain from losses than we experience joy from equal gains. For example, the pain of an unexpected loss of £5 is twice as strong as the joy of an unexpected gain of £5. In most cases, whether a gain or a loss is perceived, depends on what was expected. Getting a pay raise of £5,000 may seem like a loss if you were expecting £10,000. Unrealistic optimists, by expecting a lot, are setting themselves up for large doses of destructive disappointment. These behavioural views of the merits of an optimistic or pessimistic mindset contrast with the perspective of mainstream economics according to which it is best to have realistic beliefs. The point is that to make good decisions, accurate, unbiased information is required. Optimism and pessimism are therefore judgemental biases that make for poor decisions, leading to worse outcomes and lower wellbeing. Particularly prone to harmful error of this sort are career choices, saving decisions and any choice involving risk and uncertainty. In our research, we investigated whether it is optimists, pessimists or realists that have the highest long term wellbeing. To do this, we tracked 1,601 people over 18 years. Wellbeing was measured by self-reported life satisfaction and psychological distress. Alongside this, we measured participants’ finances and their tendency to have over or under estimated them. Better finances are associated with higher wellbeing, so no surprise there. Our main finding is that it is not just outcomes that matter but also expectations. Other thingsbeing equal, overestimating outcomes and underestimating them are both associated with lower wellbeing than getting expectations about right. Realists do best. Diners are facing a surge in rat activity following a lockdown period where the rodents were cut off from key food sources as businesses including restaurants and grocery stores shut down, forcing rats to battle for snacks and even eat each other. Since 22 June, New York City restaurants have been allowed to serve people again in outdoor settings, prompting sidewalks and car parking spaces to be dotted with tables and chairs. But the resumption of alfresco dining has led to people having unexpected rodent companions for their meals. Giacomo Romano, who owns Ciccio, an Italian restaurant in Manhattan’s Soho, said rats from a nearby park have been harassing diners since the outdoor meals were permitted. “Last night, a customer had a baby rat running on his shoe, and I let you just imagine his reaction,” Romano told NBC. Romano and other business owners have called on the city to do more to reduce rat populations, as the city hauls itself out of a pandemic crisis that has claimed more than 20,000 42 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns lives. New infections and deaths have dropped sharply since April but New York City has postponed plans to allow indoor dining due to concerns over surging Covid-19 cases in other states, such as Florida, Texas and Arizona. New York City has waged a long and often fruitless war against rats, with the rodents adapting adroitly to the city’s haphazard waste collection and disposal practices. Rats are a common sight in streets and in the subway, where the rodents have proven themselves adept at spiriting away slices of pizza. The resumption of dining activity is likely to stir a wave of activity among rats following a period of relative famine, meaning interactions with people are set to continue. “Rats are designed to smell molecules of anything that’s food-related,” Bobby Corrigan, an urban rodentologist, told NBC. “They follow those food molecules like heat-seeking missiles – and eventually you know they end up where those molecules are originating.” (Adapted from: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/10/new-york-rats-diners-outdoor-restaurants) 33. We Also Need Transparency About Its Development The authorization of an effective vaccine will mark perhaps the biggest turning point in the battle against coronavirus, but only if enough people are willing to get vaccinated. There have been substantial declines in public willingness to get vaccinated against COVID- 19, despite immense, unprecedented public investments in vaccine development. In one survey, barely half of Americans said they would get the vaccine as soon as it was available, numbers that will undermine the benefits of even a highly effective vaccine. It is no mystery why trust in a potential vaccine has plummeted. Operation Warp Speed, the Trump Administration’s $10 billion vaccine initiative, and other vaccine efforts have compressed processes that usually take years into months. This speed alone can raise concerns, but to date, that pace has been matched with strict adherence to the basic principles of scientific integrity. However, increasing politicization of key regulatory bodies and unexplained decisions in trial procedures threaten to undermine the entire project. We need a lot more transparency in this process to ensure that only a vaccine proven by data to be safe and effective will be approved. Unlike medical treatments given to the sick, vaccines are given to healthy people. Historically, vaccines have been very safe and highly effective due to the rigor and care of 45 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns both the scientists conducting the trials, and the regulators deciding whether to approve vaccines for public use. Even rare adverse events are carefully identified and studied. For vaccinations to work, we must be able to trust our doctors when they tell us it is time for a shot. The coronavirus vaccine approval process has consequences that extend well beyond the pandemic. Driven by misinformation, so-called “vaccine hesitancy” has been growing for years. But as long as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could be trusted to rigorously follow the science, most of us continued to get vaccinated. That has changed in the pandemic. The politicization of the FDA—apparent in the handling of the authorization of hydroxychloroquine and convalescent plasma, amongst others—has substantially damaged faith in the FDA. If the FDA again acts politically in approving a vaccine, it will further increase vaccine hesitancy. If safety concerns emerge after the vaccine has been approved, confidence in vaccines could be destroyed for a generation, in a single stroke, undoing a century of public health gains. But restoring trust in FDA alone will not be enough. We need the companies making the vaccines, and the researchers studying the data, to act differently as well. Recently, one of the major trials—for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, supported by more than $1 billion in public funds from Operation Warp Speed—was paused following a possible adverse reaction to the virus in a trial participant. But while the leadership of AstraZeneca mentioned the event in a private phone call with investors, they did not share the details with the public. A few days later, the trials resumed again, with little information of what changed. This will not do. Given that the American taxpayer has invested billions of dollars into these trials, and will foot the bill for billions more when the vaccine is released, the American people have a right to know much more. Beyond more fully disclosing safety events, the pharmaceutical companies working to develop a vaccine should publish the protocols of their clinical trial protocols, as Moderna did on Thursday, so we understand how the trials are structured, if changes have been made, and why. This is essential. Further, they should publish their analysis plan so the public can see what subgroups of patients the investigators had planned to study, why, and whether their approach is sound. Each time a trial is paused tell the public what happened, how it was investigated, and why the trial was allowed to continue. Making these critical documents public would be unusual—they usually aren’t made public until a trial is published. However, these are extraordinary times and failure to secure confidence in a COVID-19 vaccine would have disastrous consequences. With just weeks until the election, the pressure on the FDA to quickly approve a vaccine will mount. But the more the timeline is politicized, the more vaccine hesitancy will grow. Transparency can stem the tide of skepticism, even if it cannot entirely extinguish the persistent current of misinformation and mistrust of science. We must practice aggressive transparency, and let the FDA’s career scientists, not political appointees, make the decisions about approvals and explain those decisions to the American people. The public’s faith in the vaccine development process is a critical component of the vaccine, because vaccines don’t save lives, vaccinations do. For a vaccine to help bring this pandemic under control, hundreds of thousands of healthy Americans must undergo 46 Prof. Leonardo Pontes AULA 02 – Articles and Nouns vaccination. We need to assure them that the vaccines work—and that they are safe. These are unprecedented times. They need unprecedented transparency.
