1. David Herbert Lawrence is the author of some poetry, and also novels. His book named "Sons
and lovers", was issued in 1913, and rapidly gained a great success. Read the following excerpt:
"Paul was dissatisfied with himself and with everything. The deepest of his love belonged to his
mother. When he felt he had hurt her, or wounded his love for her, he could not bear it. Now it
was spring, and there was battle between him and Miriam. This year he had a good deal against
her. She was vaguely aware of it. The old feeling that she was to be a sacrifice to this love, which
she had had when she prayed, was mingled in all her emotions. She did not at the bottom
believe she ever would have him. She did not believe in herself primarily: doubted whether she
could ever be what he would demand of her. Certainly she never saw herself living happily
through a lifetime with him. She saw tragedy, sorrow, and sacrifice ahead. And in sacrifice she
was proud, in renunciation she was strong, for she did not trust herself to support everyday life.
She was prepared for the big things and the deep things, like tragedy. It was the sufficiency of
the small day-life she could not trust".
Write a text in ENGLISH where you talk about Lawrence's work "Sons and Lovers".
FONTE: LAWRENCE, D. H. Sons and lovers. Disponível em:

Resposta Esperada:
In this book Lawrence writes about an inconditional love a son shows in relation to his mother.
This « Edip complexe » can be seen in the second sentence of the excerpt: « The deepest of his love
belonged to his mother ».
The excerpt also shows the style of the author, who goes deepen in psychological aspects,
thoughts about feelings and life. Proufs of this style and deepness are words such as: emotions,
tragedy, sacrifice, sorrow, big things and deep things.
2. When referring to English literature, one may be talking about the English language, and also
consider the country and its culture. Thus, it concerns historical facts and events that occur in
the English culture. Is it thus possible to understand aspects of society through its literature?
Write a text in English where you ANSWER AND JUSTIFY your point of view about the subject: IS
IT POSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND ASPECTS FROM SOCIETY THROUGH ITS LITERATURE?
Resposta Esperada:
The literature of a certain country or culture comprehends either language and cultural aspects.
Thus, one may establish portraits of different moments, aspects, branches, social categories, etc.
Even if one may not exactly consider these portraits as a true reality, authors and writers are part of
the society.
Their work is thus a result of it. In English literature, for example, one may be introduced to aspects
related to climate, landscapes, activities in society, and also the way of living, according to different
literary periods.
