Leia o texto a seguir: The English for Specific Purpose Myths in Brazil The most prevailing myth associated to ESP in Brazil, and created because of the Brazilian ESP Project, is that "ESP is reading". [...] Reading was the only skill that deserved special attention in the Project. Thus, on one hand, ESP is to be understood as synonymous with reading and, on the other hand, any reading course is to be understood as ESP. As a consequence of this current myth another one comes together: "ESP is monoskill" as any teaching action that is related to its design and implementation is devoted exclusively to one ability. [...] Reading was the paramount ability identified during the needs analysis conducted in the late 70´s as needed by most target groups. [...] These should be recognizable arguments for teaching reading comprehension and, thus, making of this course a truly ESP course. Unfortunately, there are still many professionals in Brazil who still think that if you need to teach any other skill or more than one skill you are not teaching ESP. Another recurrent myth is: "ESP is technical English". One of the reasons that may explain such a misconception may have stemmed from the 70's and early 80´s when many materials on the market focusing on the language of sciences [...]: the language of chemistry, the language of medicine, etc. [...]such domain-specific breakdown materials may have contributed to an understanding that these specific Englishes were sufficiently different for a course to be based on them, with specific vocabulary being one of the chief features, and consequently creating such a misconception. Another explanation is [...] the fact that the Technical Schools [...] joined the Brazilian ESP Project in the mid-eighties may have strongly contributed to this association. Other current myths aligned with ESP Reading Courses due to the adopted methodology and the specific contents that were developed during the implementation of the ESP Project in the country are: "the use of the dictionary is not allowed", "grammar is not taught", and "Portuguese has to be used in the classroom". In order to better understand these misconceptions it is necessary to briefly explain the underlying principles adopted to teach reading. Some of the procedures put into work in the classroom were based on the belief that cognitive and linguistic difficulties should be eased and/or balanced during the learning process by making up the most of students previous knowledge. So, the use of the dictionary during the initial classes was avoided to make students explore other areas of knowledge and resources rather than those, which were believed to be very familiar (the dictionary, translation of word by word, for example). The same applies to the teaching of grammar: strategies were emphasized over grammar at the beginning of the course and the teaching of grammar, in turn, concentrated on discourse grammar rather than traditional (structural) teaching of grammar. The same underlying principle was attributed to the use of Portuguese by teacher and students in the classroom, as well as in the written instructions of activities [...]. FONTE: http://portal.mec.gov.br/seb/arquivos/pdf/pcn_estrangeira.pdf. Acesso em: 31 out. 2019. 5. III- O sentido de cometer um erro (errar) poderia ser expresso em inglês por make a mistake (e.g., he has made a mistake in the question) ou por uma construção análoga como he has answered the question wrongly. 2012. a) I e II. b) I, II e III. c) II, III e IV. d) I, III e IV. 7. Leia o texto a seguir: It has become more or less a cliché these days to refer to English as a world language. At the 1984 conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British Council there was a debate between Sir Randolph Quirk and Professor Braj Kachru on the (literally) million-dollar question of 'who owns English', and hence whose English must be adopted as the model for teaching the language worldwide (Quirk and Widdowson 1985). Since then, much has been written on the role of English as a language of international communication, and the desirability or otherwise of adopting one of the Inner Circle varieties of English (to all intents and purposes, either British or American) as the canonical model for teaching it as a second or foreign language. The position vigorously defended by Quirk in that debate- succinctly captured in the phrase 'a single monochrome standard' (Quirk 1985: 6) - no longer appeals to the majority of those who are involved in the ELT enterprise in one way or another. Instead, Kachru's equally spirited insistence that 'the native speakers [of English] seem to have lost the exclusive prerogative to control its standardization' (Kachru 1985: 30), and his plea for a paradigm shift in linguistic and pedagogical research so as to bring it more in tune with the changing landscape, have continued to strike a favorable chord with most ELT professionals. And the idea that English belongs to everyone who speaks it has been steadily gaining ground. Though still resisted in some quarters, the very idea of World English (henceforward, WE) makes the whole question of the 'ownership' of English problematic, not to say completely anachronistic. Widdowson expressed the idea in a very telling manner when he wrote 'It is a matter of considerable pride and satisfaction for native speakers of English that their language is an international means of communication. But the point is that it is only international to the extent that it is not their language.' (italics mine) (Widdowson 1994: 385). [...] Lest I should be misunderstood here, please note what it is that I am not claiming. I am not saying that there are no native speakers of English any more-if by native speakers we mean persons who were born and brought up in monolingual households with no contact with other languages. Indeed, that would be an absurd thing to say. As with every other language, there will-for the immediately foreseeable future at least-continue to be children born into monolingual English-speaking households who will, under the familiar criteria established for the purpose (Davies 1991), qualify as native speakers of English. But what we are interested in at the moment is WE, not the English language as it is spoken in English- speaking households, or the Houses of Parliament in Britain. WE is a language (for want of a better term, that is) spoken across the world-routinely at the check-in desks and in the corridors and departure lounges of some of the world's busiest airports, typically during multi- national business encounters, periodically during the Olympics or World Cup Football seasons, international trade fairs, academic conferences, and so on [...]. Leia o texto a seguir: A long standing cultural icon in English-speaking Western TESOL [TESOL- Teaching English to Students of Other Languages] is 'the 4 skills'. Although 'the 4 skills' are not conceptualized and used in exactly the same way as they were in the 1960s or 1970s, they remain as an icon around which are collected behaviours which continue to maintain a powerful ideological force of staging and control. 'The 4 skills' concept is still evident as an icon in all areas of culture formation [...] It is a core contributor to the recipe and convention for programme and lesson design, for measuring both students and the 'target language'. It is thus central to professional cohesion in the way in which it helps to consolidate practice, and indeed is a major characteristic of an exclusive TESOL technology. A major product of the English-speaking Western TESOL is its vast literature. Here, 'the 4 skills' play a major part. Hedge (2000: 20) devotes over 30% of her key reference book to the teaching of the 'familiar and traditional 4 language skills. Harmer (2001) similarly devotes almost 25 per cent to 'the 4 skills' in his book, which is probably the basic manual of TESOL practice. As basic training manuals, these products feed back into the formation and expression of an exclusive group of professionals [...] This does not mean to say that 'the 4 skills' is approved as a basis of practice by everyone 'in the culture' (eg., Clark & Ivanic 1997). I am not talking about mass agreement but about the significance of the presence of such icons. One does not have to approve of, or speak in favour of Marilyn Monroe for her to be a significant icon in our society. There is also a large difference between what an academic fringe might say and write and what practitioners may adhere to in the day-to-day demands of their work. There are however some grounds for suggesting that establishing 'the 4 skills' as part of the naturalized routine of the institution of TESOL is a major aim of training programmes which seek to initiate novice teachers into the culture. The success of this is seen in the way in which many competent practitioners use 'the 4 skills' as the natural default mechanism for solving curriculum problems. I came face-to-face with this when I tried to get my masters students [...] to doan analysis of language behavior in a social setting while designing an English for specific purpose programme. They automatically analysed the language behaviour in terms of 'the 4 skills'; and I found it very hard to convince them that there might be other, sociocultural skills that they could look for. As a phrase which is often uttered by colleagues, 'the 4 skills' is central to the discourse of [...] TESOL professionalism, both as a cohesive shared language as a statement of how 'we' are and how 'we' see things in 'our' culture [...], and indeed construct students and TESOL people from Other cultures. Leia o texto a seguir: English as a lingua franca Teaching and learning English as a lingua franca (ELF) is probably the most radical and controversial approach to emerge in recent years. It squarely addresses some of the issues which global English raises. An inexorable trend in the use of global English is that fewer interactions now involve a native- speaker. Proponents of teaching English as a lingua franca (ELF) suggest that the way English is taught and assessed should reflect the needs and aspirations of the ever-growing number of non-native speakers who use English to communicate with other non-natives. Understanding how non-native speakers use English among themselves has now become a serious research area. Proponents of ELF have already given some indications of how they think conventional approaches should be changed, as for example, the different priorities in teaching English pronunciation. Intelligibility is of primary importance, rather than native-like accuracy. Teaching certain pronunciation features, such as the articulation of "th" as an interdental fricative, appears to be a waste of time whereas other common pronunciation problems, such as simplifying consonant clusters, contribute to problems of understanding. Unlike traditional EFL (English as a foreign language), ELF focuses on pragmatic strategies required in intercultural communication. The target model of English, within the ELF framework, is not a native speaker but a fluent bilingual speaker, who retains a national identity in terms of accent, and who also has special skills required to negotiate understanding with another non- native speaker. ELF suggests a radical reappraisal of the way English is taught, and even if few adopt ELF in its entirety, some of its ideas are likely to influence mainstream teaching and assessment practices in the future. Sobre a ideia principal por trás do conceito de ensino do inglês como língua franca, assinale a alternativa CORRETA: FONTE: GRADDOL, David. English Next.
